Our 4 Step Process to Content Production

Everyone's got their own way of doing things.

As a B2B tech content production company that's been in business for a decade, we've got quite a few solid ideas for how to produce good content that sells.

Here's what we do when we start working with a new client.

Phase 1: Kickoff

This helps us establish who the brand is so that we can intelligently create pinpointed content.

We begin with a kickoff call where we ask a series of questions.

  1. Brand: Who are you as a brand? What is your mission and vision? How do you want people to talk about you when you’re not in the room?
  2. Product: What is your product?
  3. Offer: How are you packaging it? What set of features are you bundling together at what prices? Do you work on a freemium model? How many price points do you have?
  4. Market: What market do you operate in? Who are the major players? Who are your competitors?
  5. Buyer: Who is your ideal customer? We have an Ideal Customer Profile template you can use (second tab). What position do they have? What are their priorities?
  6. Growth Engine: Which touchpoints drive your business forward? Where do you get your customers? Check out the third tab for our Customer Journey template.

Double down on those points and then check for content gaps - where else can you try bringing in more customers?

Phase 2: Content Plan

This is where we check for content gaps. What's missing in your current content landscape? Where are you losing potential customers?

Once we list all the pieces of content you need, we prioritize the most important ones. Looking at upcoming events and product releases, we then create a campaign plan, based on your current plan.

Our standard subscription-based graphic design plan creates a holistic campaign each month, with one signature piece being the cornerstone, continuing with three extractions and 12 social posts, all derived from the signature piece.

You can use this template to create a Quarterly Plan (fourth tab).

Phase 3: Production

There are so many ways you can produce content. We wrote about your options here.

If you choose to go with designers, make sure you know how to work with designers.

Phase 4: Iteration and upkeep

We are all about the iteration.

First drafts are vital as they give you something to comment on. Even if it's something you don't like, at least you now know what you don't like. Having something to see will help you understand what you do and don't like, and gets the design process moving faster.

Keep iterating until you get it.

Now for upkeep - stay consistent but also keep your brand up to date as the market and your company evolves.
